Located in the Caucusus, where Europe meets the Middle East, Georgia is a small country that’s rich in history and culture and is the home of Georgian, one of the world’s more interesting languages. Bordered by Russia to the north and east, Azerbaijan to the south-east, Armenia to the south, Turkey to the south-west and the Black Sea to the west, Georgia is an ex-Soviet republic that is fast becoming a major tourist destination. This isn’t only because of the old cities, rolling landscapes and plentiful wine, but also because Georgia is an extremely affordable country. It’s also a country with good schools and great international connections.
The Georgian higher education system prides itself on producing highly-skilled, well-rounded graduates who have benefited from an interdisciplinary approach to their learning. Georgian schools have connections with the likes of Cambridge, Harvard and Yale, meaning that you can begin to build a truly international network while you study. An undergraduate degree takes between three and five years to complete, depending on the subject. A postgraduate degree normally takes two years. A PhD takes between three and seven years, depending on whether or not you teach as you write your thesis. It’s also important to note that all international students are responsible for paying their own tuition fees, although these fees are very much affordable, ranging from US$2500 to US$6000 per year. Programs taught in English are normally at the higher end of this range. Programs that require the school to have a lot of materials and facilities in place, like medicine, are also towards the higher end.
