SLOVAKIA: It all begins here!

Slovakia, officially the Slovak Republic, is in Central Europe. It borders Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary to the south and Austria and the Czech Republic to the west. Slovakia is small, but it packs a lot in. From its rolling pastures to sharp mountains, Slovakia is known for its natural beauty.

The “Beauty on the Danube” is just one of the names given to Bratislava, the Slovak capital. The city spreads along the base of the Small Carpathians beside the longest river in Europe, the Danube. Bratislava is one of the youngest capitals in the world, but its rich history has been chronicled for over two thousand years. Visitors are drawn to the intimacy of the city, which constantly pulses with life and culture. The most attractive part of Bratislava is Staré mesto (Old Town), where you can wander the narrow streets and admire the impressive historical monuments. The city center is full of hidden spots, cozy cafes, and excellent restaurants. A modern metropolis, the city serves as a venue for a diverse range of cultural and sporting events and year-round entertainment that complement the unforgettable atmosphere of this picturesque city.

Slovakia has a long tradition of academic excellence in higher education. The first university in the territory of present-day Slovakia was founded in 1465. The first technical university in the world was founded by Maria Theresia in 1762 in Banská Štiavnica, a former European center of mining and technological development. Nowadays, Slovakia has many fully-accredited universities that follow the principles of the Bologna Declaration. Slovakia provides students with three levels of study: Bachelor’s (3-4 years), Master’s (4-6 years), and PhD. (3 years in addition to the Magister program).

Students in Slovakia enjoy the benefits of its competitive, progressive higher education system. The Slovak academic year begins on 1 September and ends on 31 August of the following year, and is composed of 2 semesters (the winter semester from September to January, and the summer semester from February to June). Students are assessed according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). Grades are provided on a lettered scale, with A (1) representing excellent and FX (4) representing a failing grade. Students have access to a wide range of student organizations, special programs, and student discounts and deals offered throughout the country. Graduates of Slovakia’s universities go on to find lasting career success in the corporate, non-profit, and government sectors – both in Slovakia and abroad.
